Frequently Asked Questions

Whether you have been following Jesus for many years, are just beginning to explore faith, or are simply looking for a church family, we hope these answers help you get to know Promise Church a little better

  • chevron_right Why does Promise Church use the New Living Translation?

At Promise Church, we believe the Bible is the inspired Word of God, and it is a joy and a privilege to teach it faithfully.

We primarily use the New Living Translation (NLT) because our desire is for everyone who walks through our doors—whether they have studied the Bible for thirty years or are opening one for the very first time—to be able to read Gods Word, understand it, and grow through it.

The NLT is not a paraphrase. It is a true translation of the Scriptures, produced by a large team of respected biblical scholars working from the Hebrew, Aramaic, and Greek texts. Its approach is often described as meaning-for-meaning, carefully communicating the meaning of the original text in clear, natural English.

We believe that beautiful combination of accuracy and readability makes the NLT especially helpful for the people God brings through our doors.

We are also grateful to stand alongside respected pastors and Bible teachers who have recognized the value of the NLT.

Chuck Swindoll respected Bible teacher, longtime pastor, and former president and current chancellor of Dallas Theological Seminary, chose the NLT for The Swindoll Study Bible. He has spoken of both its readability and trustworthiness and of the strong biblical scholarship behind the translation.

Greg Laurie longtime pastor and evangelist whose Harvest Crusades have shared the gospel with millions of people in stadiums and arenas in the tradition of Billy Grahams evangelistic ministry, has also used the NLT extensively, including in his New Believers Bible, created to help new Christians understand Gods Word and grow in their faith.

At Promise Church, our heart is not simply to see people come to church. Our desire is to see people come to know Jesus and fall in love with His Word.

We teach the Scriptures carefully. When a passage calls for a closer look, we regularly examine the original Hebrew or Greek and compare other trusted Bible translations. Yet on Sunday morning, there is something beautiful about seeing someone who has studied the Bible for decades sitting beside someone who may be opening a Bible for the first time—and both being able to understand the Word of God together.

Our prayer is that nothing unnecessary would stand between a person and understanding the Scriptures.

Thats why we use the New Living Translation at Promise Church. We believe it is accurate, trustworthy, readable, and wonderfully suited to our mission of helping people follow Jesus, learn the Bible, and build family.

  • chevron_right How should I dress?

    Come as you are!

At Promise Church, you will find people dressed in all kinds of ways. Some wear jeans and a T-shirt, some come in business casual, and every once in a while somebody even puts on a tie!

There is no pressure to look a certain way. We simply encourage clothing that is modest and appropriate for gathering together as a church family.

Our desire is for you to feel comfortable, welcomed, and ready to worship with us.

  • chevron_right What kind of music will I hear?

Worship is something we take seriously at Promise Church.

Our worship team carefully and prayerfully selects songs that are biblically faithful, theologically sound, Christ-centered, and appropriate for the church to sing together.

As we select music, our greatest consideration is whether a song honors Jesus, agrees with Scripture, and helps our church family worship Him in spirit and in truth. We also value the character and ministry of those whose music we bring into our church.

You will hear a beautiful blend of contemporary worship music and timeless songs of the faith, led by a team whose heart is to help our church family worship Jesus together.

Our desire is simple: to sing songs that are true to Gods Word, centered on Jesus, and pleasing to Him.

  • chevron_right What can I expect from Promise Kids?

Promise Kids is much more than childcare. It is a place where children are loved, cared for, and taught the Bible.

One of the things that makes Promise Kids special is that our curriculum is handcrafted each week specifically for our children.

Our ministry team receives our preaching schedule well in advance, which gives them the opportunity to develop lessons that connect with what Mom and Dad will be learning during the Sunday gathering.

That means the whole family can go home talking about the same biblical truth.

The sermon title or Big Idea will often even appear on the childrens activity or coloring page. When that page ends up on the refrigerator at home, it becomes another opportunity for the entire family to remember and talk about what they learned together.

Our curriculum is taught by a team of trained, background-checked teachers who care deeply about children and their spiritual development.

Safety is also extremely important to us. Promise Church has invested in a comprehensive video security system throughout the Promise Kids area. Cameras monitor entrances, common areas, hallways, and classrooms, allowing our leadership to monitor the childrens ministry environment when needed. Cameras are positioned appropriately to protect childrens privacy, including during diapering and other personal-care needs.

We consider it a tremendous privilege when parents place their children in our care.

Our prayer is simple: children are safe, children are loved, children learn the Bible, and families grow together.

  • chevron_right What is the youth ministry like?

Our youth ministry is built around something very simple: Jesus, the Bible, and family.

Pastor James leads our youth ministry and has a deep love for students and a passion for the gospel. He is joined by a wonderful team of leaders who help disciple young people and walk through life with them. His wife, Tiana, has a special heart for our young women and helps care for and oversee the girls small-group ministry.

And those relationships extend well beyond Wednesday night.

Pastor James believes in doing life with students. You may find him at a volleyball game, basketball game, or football game, or sitting across the table with a student over coffee, ice cream, or a burger. Alongside the other leaders, Tiana invests personally in the young women, while James intentionally disciples the young men.

Wednesday nights are filled with both fun and spiritual growth. Students gather for an icebreaker and spend time together as a large group before Pastor James opens the Bible and teaches Gods Word. The gospel is clearly presented, and students are regularly given an opportunity to respond to Jesus.

After the message, students break into smaller groups—girls with female leaders and boys with male leaders. Together they discuss questions from the message, open their Bibles, share what is happening in their lives, take prayer requests, and pray for one another.

We believe teenagers need the gospel, the Bible, godly relationships, and people who will faithfully walk through life with them.

Thats what were building at Promise Youth: Jesus, the Bible, and family for generations.

  • chevron_right Do you have mens, womens, and couples Bible studies?

    Yes, absolutely!

There are plenty of opportunities throughout the week for adults at Promise Church to open the Bible, grow in their faith, and build relationships with one another.

We offer mens Bible studies, womens Bible studies, and couples Bible studies, with gatherings taking place on different evenings throughout the week.

These are more than meetings on a calendar. They are opportunities to study Gods Word together, ask questions, pray for one another, encourage one another, and build genuine friendships.

Whether you are married or single, new to the Bible or have been studying it for years, there is a place for you to connect and grow.

Learn the Bible. Build family. Do it together.

  • chevron_right What is unique about Promise Church?

The best way to answer that question is through our mission: Helping people follow Jesus, learn the Bible, and build family. These aren’t just words on a wall—they describe what happens when we gather together.

    Follow Jesus

At Promise Church, the gospel is central to everything we do.

We have a saying here: “A gospel-less sermon is no sermon at all.”

Every time the Word of God is preached, our desire is to point people to Jesus. Whether the passage comes from Genesis, the Psalms, one of the Prophets, the Gospels, or Paul’s letters, the good news of Jesus Christ remains at the heart of our preaching, and every sermon includes a clear invitation to respond to the gospel and come to Jesus.

Some who walk through our doors have followed Christ for decades. Others are still figuring out what they believe. Wherever someone is on that journey, our prayer is that they hear about Jesus clearly, experience His grace, and understand what it means to follow Him.

    Learn the Bible

We take the Word of God seriously at Promise Church, and we love seeing people with an open Bible in their hands. During the sermon, we encourage everyone to put away their phones and hold the pages of Scripture. In a world filled with texts, emails, and constant distractions, there is something valuable about setting those things aside and giving God’s Word our full attention.

We read it. We study it. We explain it. We apply it.

Our desire is for people to leave understanding what the Bible says, what it means, and how it applies to everyday life. You don’t need to be a scholar to come to Promise Church. Bring your questions. Bring your Bible. We will learn God’s Word together.

    Build family

If there’s one thing people notice quickly about Promise Church, it’s the strong sense of family.

From the moment you pull in, our hope is that you feel at home. You’ll meet ordinary, approachable people who are genuinely happy you’re here. First-time guests often tell us, “So many people came up and said hello to me.” People notice people—and that matters, because many people are doing life alone.

Scripture describes God as a “Father to the fatherless, defender of widows,” who “places the lonely in families” (Psalm 68:5–6, NLT). James 1:27 reminds us that pure religion includes caring for widows and orphans in their distress. We believe God cares for people through His church.

That’s why we have ministries like Sisters Around the Table, where women walking through life without a spouse gather to eat, laugh, pray, and build real friendships. Our men are building those kinds of relationships too. Our heart is that everyone has someone to walk through life with.

At Promise Church, family isn’t limited to a last name or a husband, wife, and children. In Christ, God has given us brothers and sisters—a spiritual family for every season of life.

And we love to eat! On the last Sunday of every month, our church family stays after the service to share lunch together. Add in dinners, Bible studies, and homemade treats, and there’s always food around Promise Church. Some of the best conversations and strongest relationships happen around a table.

So, what makes Promise Church unique? It comes back to three things: Follow Jesus. Learn the Bible. Build family. We are ordinary people following an extraordinary Savior, learning His Word together, and becoming a family along the way. That’s a little of what makes Promise Church, Promise Church.
